William has now had 4 soccer games. He was very excited to play, and he loved practice. But, after the first game, I realized he needed a lot of help. So, we began practicing. We practiced running (so he wouldn't run out of energy), we practiced kicking, and we practiced blocking the ball.
William seemed to be improving, he even did well at practice. And then began Game 2. William was all over the place....staring at the plane flying overhead, running left as the ball went right, walking behind everyone as they were running to get the ball. If anything, he was worse then before.
So, we began to practice again. It got to the point that he complained and said he didn't want to play. That was when I decided to try a new tactic.
Before Game 3, I sat William down and talked to him. I told him to just have fun and try to kick the ball. "In fact," I said, "if you just kick the ball, I will buy you an ice cream cone. All you have to do is kick the ball."
Well, that got him excited. He ran out there and kicked the ball right away. Then he looked right at me and smiled. It made my heart melt! When he came out to rest, I told him that he needed to keep kicking the ball so that Aubrey could get a cone, and then kick for Brooke and then me. He said, "OK" and took off. He had his best game EVER!
We were so proud of William, and at the end of the game Coach gathered everyone together to talk. He told all of the players that they did well, and then he said, "William, you did great today. You are my MVP."
William was so happy and proud of himself, and now he loves soccer again. I'm so glad.
